From the Birkin to the Body: A New Frequency in Fashion

For more than two decades, fashion asked us one question above all others: what will this say about me? The monogram stitched into the leather, the initials pressed into the hardware, the familiar curve of a handbag's silhouette, each detail spoke a shared language, signaling how far a person had come and how much they had spent to get there. To hold a Birkin was to hold evidence: proof of arrival, of taste, of belonging in rooms earned over years. The label was rarely just a label. It worked as a kind of passport, stamped by every knowing glance, echoing a person's worth in a currency the whole room acknowledged.

I know this language because I have spoken it myself. There was a time when I believed something outside me—an object, a name, a certain shape slung over my shoulder, could complete what felt unfinished within. I write this from inside that experience, not from above it, still walking the path I’m inviting you to join. What I sought through those objects, I eventually had to find within myself, and that meeting took far longer than any handbag could ever have waited. This is the honesty this piece asks of me, as much as it asks of you.

Call this the Seeking Stage. Here, dressing becomes an act of translation for an audience beyond the self, where the wardrobe is filled with items chosen for the story they tell about status, rather than how they feel against your skin. In the Seeking Stage, the outfit acts as a mirror turned outward, angled toward approval, admiration, belonging. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be seen; the desire to be witnessed is deeply human. The problem comes when being seen depends only on what you wear, not on who you are, when the value of the self ties itself to the value of the object. The two become so closely linked that it can be hard to tell where the garment ends and your own worth begins.

But something is shifting now, noticeable in how women talk about their clothes. The question is changing from what does this say about me to how does this feel on me. Substance is replacing name. More women want to know how a garment was made, whose hands worked the fabric, and what intention shaped it before it reached a rack. They want a tailored jacket or hand-dyed dress to carry a story of care, not just a story of cost—and increasingly, they find that in the work of independent designers. These designers create from passion, not projection, unlike the towering houses whose names once meant everything. This is the Awareness Stage: dressing from resonance, not recognition; choosing a piece because it stirs something true in you, not because it impresses a stranger.

None of this asks anyone to give up a love of beautiful things or to treat fashion as less than meaningful. Fashion has always held real power. The invitation is simply to tune the instrument, to let what you wear match who you are, rather than borrowing a frequency from outside and hoping it will eventually feel like home. A garment made with love holds a different energy than one made to be recognised, and the body senses this even when the mind does not. Dressing from that inner alignment means you’re no longer asking the world for permission to feel whole. You’re just letting what you already are move through what you choose to wear.

I offer this reflection with gratitude, for the version of me who once believed a name could complete her, and for you, wherever you are on this path. May your wardrobe become a place of remembering, not proving, and may every piece you choose from here on out be chosen for how true it feels against your skin, not for how loudly it speaks for you.

Much Love
